Notes
  • This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. This particular segment is a continuation of segment 01 of the Mayor's interview. Here, Mayor Pelgrim picks up mid-sentence from segment 01 and talks about savings that the City received in fewer hardware cycles, and controling software upgrades as well. Mayor Pelgrim says that Schwaebisch Hall saved 200,000 Euros in 2002 and 2003 by moving to open source software. That was not a large percentage of the budget, but given the steep financial crisis in which the City found itself, Mayor Pelgrim says that it allowed him to save a kindergaten. We asked him what was the hardest part of the switch to open source software. Surpisingly, he said it was getting lots and lots of calls from around the world!! He said that his staff received emails from China, Australia, Austria, and Finland, for example. tape id = e-dv079_sh_38_mayor_002.mpg The DTP will be many, many films created by the global open source video community about how open source is changing their lives. We, the DTP crew, are submitting this footage for anyone to rip, mix, and burn under the Creative Commons Attribute - ShareAlike license.
