Notes
  • Mostly handwritten letters, 1904-1906, to Mrs. Pennell granting her permission to publish personal correspondence in her biography of her uncle. All items were found folded inside the cardboard case of Mrs. Pennell's copy of her two-volume Leland biography in the custody of the Prints & Photographs Division, Library of Congress.
  • Title devised by cataloger.
  • Handwritten letters from: Mrs. Walter Besant, Mrs. Edward Burne-Jones, Moncure D. Conway, Mrs. Edwin Edwards (2 letters), F.H. Groome's sister, Joseph Jackson (discussing Leland bibliography), Lord Lytton (Edward Bulwer-Lytton's grandson), Mary Alicia Owen, Mrs. Edward Henry Palmer, John Dyneley Prince (2 letters), John Sampson (3 letters), Hubert Llewellyn Smith, John Stirling Maxwell (concerning correspondence from Caroline Sheridan Norton, 2 letters), Lord Tennyson's son, G. Van de Velde (concerning Bret Harte's correspondence, 2 letters).
  • Typescript letter from Smith, Elder and Co., publishers, concerning poet Robert Browning's correspondence.
  • Other ephemera: two typescript quotations from letters from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Charles Godfrey Leland, apparently drafts for the biography; four pages of handwritten notes by Philadelphia historian Joseph Jackson for a Leland bibliography; two storage receipts, 1899, made out to Leland from the Albany Pantechnicon & West End Safe Deposit Co. (London) and a baggage receipt, 1902, from the Langham Hotel (London) also in Leland's name.
  • References to the authors and subjects of the letters abound in Pennell's biography of Leland, especially in volume II, where the letters for which permission was granted are transcribed. The biography's index helps to identify the authors of both the original letters to Leland and the letters of permission written to Pennell.
