Summary
The Baruya of Papua New Guinea live on the rugged Wonenara and Marawaka valleys of the Eastern Highlands. In 1969 the male initiation ceremonies of the Baruya, held in Wonenara Valley, were recorded in the film series: Towards Baruya manhood. These ceremonies were for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th stages of initiation. In 1979 Chuwanandaye of the Chacha clan of the Baruya invited Maurice Godelier and Ian Dunlop to return to film a full Muka or first stage of initiation ceremony. This was to be the first full Muka ceremony held for many years. It lasted 6 weeks. This video is a record of that event.
