Sir— After an attentive perusal of Mr. Todd's
interesting and elaborate report on the proposed
electric telegraph, as an occasional resident in
the South-Eastern District 'for many years
past,, and familiarly acquainted with every mile
of country traversed by that; gentleman, in
so far as this portion of the line is concerned
although a stranger, I cannot but offer Mr.,
Todd my humble meed of praise for his judi
possible to find one possessing superior facilities
for the purpose than the one he recommends,
the only material drawback throughout this
portion of the line being the entire absence of
timber — a difficulty that must still exist, let any
other way be selected, or through the Long
Desert, via Wellington, as at one time talked of,
without the important consideration which
the present proposed line possesses, viz., water
conveyance.
I observe, Mr. Editor, in your recent article
headed "The Adelaide and Melbourne Tele
raph,' you allude to this want of timber,
between Goolwa and Robe, - adding,,. ''.there.
would, therefore, be considerable outlay in respect
of carriage.' Now, with all deference to your
opinion, knowing well the locality, I do. not
feresee any formidable objection on this head;
Guichen Bay, Maria Creek, any part of Lace
pede Bay, at any season , and the whole extent
of the Coororog, up to Bowman's and Martin's
station, eight miles south of the Salt Creek,
offering every facility for the transhipment of
timber and all necessary apparatus. As this
is truly, an Australian question of the first
magnitude, affecting the interest of every in
