LORD SOMERS AT SWAN HILL. SWAN HILL Thursday - His Excel- lency the Governor (Lord Somers), who Lake by Councillor C. Brydon, president and J G Shipp, and Mr H Bucknall shire secretary. Mr. Gordon, of the Kangaroo Lake Estate, entertained the party with afternoon tea, after which the journey was resumed . At Tresco Lord Somers visited the State school and ad- dressed the children . On arrival at Swan Hill the shire council entertained Lord Somers at dinner at the Commercial Hotel. Councillor Brydon, in proposing the health of Lord Somers, expressed pleasure at his visit, and hoped that he would be interested in the district. Replying, Lord Somers stated that he was only on a flying visit, principally to be- country, and especially the soldier settlers on their blocks, also those from overseas. He had been impressed with the develop- ment made at the various soldier settle- ments considering the few years they had been established. In the shire hall, under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers League (north western district branch), a smke social was held. Mr W. Allnott, who presided, said that returned soldiers appreciated the fact that His Excellency was a member of the organisation. They desired to help the Governments of Austialia to keep up a constant stream of immigrants, men and women, of the old stock. He also ex- pressed appreciation of His Exccllency seeking to visit the countrtyside to sec settlers and soldiers and to understand their problems, and later, on returning to England, to become a recruiting officer for immigration. Lord Somers, replying said that he re- garded it as a privilege to wear the badge of the Returned Soldiers League. He was a farmer, and though conditions were different here he could by contact under- stand better how they fared. A "digger' to him meant a 'sticker ". He felt confi- dent that if they stuck it" on their land they would come out right in the end. Hie believed that if dried fruits, citrus, and other products grown here could be placed on the British markets as produced they would be successful in competing against products of other countries . The time would come when they would be able to present their products in that condition and then they would by effeciency hold then own in the markets of Europe. |
