Milbra Nott was arraigned yesterday before Sir George Innes, for tho murder of Robert Bruce Mitchell, by stabbing him at Stannifer in October last. The jury retired about 4o'clock and at 8 o'clock brought in a verdict of "wilful murder", with a strong re- commendation to mercy, in which the Judge fully concurred. A most painful scene took place when the ver- dict was given. 'Tie prisoner, who had wept during the whole trial, fell off the chair and went into hysteria and had to be carried out of court. In about 10 minutes she was again brought into court and held up by a policeman whilst the sentence was passed. . The Judge, said he would do all in his power to carry the jury's recommendation into effect. Milbra Nott in an orphan, of about 18 years of age. She is very good looking, and was engaged to Mitchell. It was in consequence of his refusal to carry out his promise after making all arrangements that she stabbed him. The general impression was that the verdict would be one of manslaughter. |
