Edward John Richards enlisted in the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion at Blackboy Hill (Bellevue) on 17 August 1914. He had a hidden talent for writing that only became apparent on his entering the army. E. J. R. as he was known, wrote numerous articles from Blackboy Hill and abroad.
Some of which were published in several of the larger W.A. newspapers, however most were are to be found in his local newspaper, the Northam Advertiser.
One article in the Kalgoorlie Sun newspaper said this: “The best war stuff that is being sent from Gallipoli to this State is from the pen of one E. R. Richards, of Northam.
Before enlisting he was a compositor on the local paper. His literary talents were unsuspected until he was in khaki."

The 'Albany Advertiser' writes: — When volunteers were called for on the outbreak of war, Hubert Kitson mounted a horse and rode out into the bush to find his mate, Harold McGlade. The latter was then employed at the pumping station. Both came into town astride the one horse, and forthwith sought out the recruiting officer. They left to go into camp with the first batch of men from Albany, and sailed with the memorable fleet which formed up in King George's Sound at the end of October, 1914. Both served all through Gallipoli, and then went with their regiment to France, there to remain until leave was given the original Anzacs just before the armistice was signed. Kitson was once wounded, but McGlade, although engaged in all the fighting, was never once wounded, and was never once sick. The two men returned to Albany during the holidays.

The 51st Australian Infantry Battalion by "Barb".
Twelve miles east of Serapeum, on the Suez Canal, in one of the most barren and desolate spots on this earth, the 51st Battalion A.I.F. had its birth early in 1916, when the authorities decided to form another division.
The battalion was formed by taking one half of the 11th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade, and drafting in reinforcements from the 7th Training Battalion at Zeitoun. The 51st was purely a West Australian battalion. Each of its platoons was made up by taking two sections of veterans and two of reinforcements, the men being placed together territorially as far as possible.
