http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16785089 - a very similar pic to this...which looks to have been taken on the same occasion...appeared in the SMH pictorial on 12th June, 1931.

The pic that appeared in the SMH was evidently taken the previous day at Circular Quay, in Sydney, when unemployed workers seeking to obtain rations had their bona fides checked as part of a drive to eliminate dole fraud. Evidently similar checks were conducted at unemployment relief depot...

2017-06-19 19:10 q.m. Customers queue to apply as necessitous depositors at the Commonwealth Bank on the corner of Castlereagh Street and Martin Place, Sydney, 1931 (Version)
Here we see a queue of people lined up outside the Government Savings Bank of NSW, on the corner of Elizabeth St and Martin Place, in Sydney. Most of the people we see here are standing in Elizabeth St.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/224717518 - a cropped version of this pic appeared in the Sun pictorial on 10th August, 1931. Here we see NSW Labor MLAs Hugh Connell (left) and Martin Flannery (right). Connell died in 1934, so that's the 'latest date' for this pic.

Of course Connell and Flannery were on opposite sides of the factional war which tore the NSW Labor Party apart in the mid-later 1920s...Connell was a leading anti-Lang figure whilst Flannery was a Lang loyalist....so it's kind of interesting that we see them chatting here without a blooded knife or blunt instrument in frame.

http://trove.nl...
