Letter from Charles Harper to the Directors of Metropolitan Colliery: It is noted that on the day of the publication of this letter, 4 August, the author, Charles Harper, was fatally injured whilst supervising the installation of an engine at the colliery. The Maitland Mercury, of 11 August, 1888, carries an account of the accident.

Sid "Sandy" PEARCE was a pioneer of rugby league in Australia, playing 176 games for Eastern Suburbs from 1908 - 1921, the first from that club to reach the 150 game mark. He also played 14 Tests between 1908 and 1921. His son, Joe, also played for Australia and they became the first father-son team to achieve that milestone. He was known as the Prince of Hookers.
