The library came into being in 1901. From 1923 two forms of name were used concurrently: Commmonwealth Parliament Library and Commonwealth National Library, to designate the parliamentary and national collections respectively. In 1960 the National Library of Australia was created by act of parliament, and the two collections were separated.
