Biographies

John Allen Ovenstone worked for Weapons Research Establishment and other areas of Department of Defence. One of his projects was managing the integrated automatic processing of data recorded during missile flight trials. This led to the WREDAC computer, which began operations in 1956. He later used the WREDAC to process WRE's administrative date, the basis for his later plans for a totally automated administrative information system in the Department of Defence.

Born Sydney, 21 May 1925. Died 1984.Educated Universities of Sydney (BSc (hons) and Cambridge (PhD). AIF 1941-44; RAAF 1944-45; NSW Police 1945-46; doctoral student, Cambridge Mathematical Laboratory 1949-52; Senior Scientific Officer, Weapons Research Establishment, South Australia 1953-58; Assistant Secretary and Controller, Defence EDP Centre, Department of Defence 1958-63, First Assistant Secretary and Controller 1963-64; Professor of Computing Science and Director, Computer Centre, University of Adelaide 1964-71; Managing Director, INBUCON (Australia) Pty Ltd from 1971.
