VULTEE VENGEANCE DIVEBOMBERS which are hammering strategic targets in New Guinea area are manned by specially trained. RAAF daredevils. On February 27 a successful raid was made on the airstrip at Alexishaven, and crews on arrival back at base reported that "smoke could be seen rising when they were well on the homeward trip." Above pictures are from a series telling the story of the raid. Left: Vultees well above the mountain tops, flying at 12,000 feet. Height must be made before the pilot puts the nose down into a steep dive on the target. Right: Forbidding country is flown over between base and target, and the aircraft fly in close formation to give maximum protection against Japanese fighters. A false move here may mean death.
