A Merry Christmas. WVE have received a packet of Christmns cards from Messrs. Gibbs, Shallard, and Co. which deserve a word of commendation. It has grown into It custom to transmit these illuminated compliments of the season, and the post office returns annually prove how many give the custom their unqualified approval. The specimens before us speak for themselves. Their execution is beautiful, and tle subjects chosen are a marked improvement over the ordinary ones. To friends in the far-off mother land these representations of orient flowers and scenes will be of infinite interest, and will give them a value in the eyes of the recipients which the imported ones, however elaborate and costly, could not possess. Amongst others, we are pictorially introduced to the dark aboriginal and to the inhabitants of the plains and valleys, the swift kangaroo and emu. The noisy cicada under his arch of leaves is depicted with fidelity. The brilliantly-plumaged cockatoo is given in full flight. And of course there is an allegorical reference to the Soudan expedition. We would recommend those whose intention it is to forward to their distant friends a little memento of Yuletide to look over the interesting and appropriate cards issued by Messrs. Gibbs, Shallard, and Co. We feel convinced the most fastidious will find something to satisfy him. The Melbourne Y. 31. C. Association picnio wa:s held on Tuesday (cup day). The members went by rail to Frankston. It was attended by about 50t ,xx~nl,
