SECOND BOMB

FOUND

Weeroona Area

Safe Again

THE second of two live bombs

reported missing off the

north-west corner of Weeroona Island 10 days ago, following a C.M.F. bivouac, was located yesterday and exploded and the area has now been reported

safe.

Maj. J. O. Geddes (officer commanding D Company, 27th Infantry Battalion) said yesterday that a very low tide had assisted Maj. Daly and Capt. Kimber, of No. 5 Central Ammunition Depot, Gladstone, to find the missile- a Piat anti-tank bomb.

They had been returning to the shore, after having made a thorough search, when they had found the bomb with its nose buried in mud.

"There may be a few inert bombs in the area, but they are harmless. The area is now quite safe," said Maj. Geddes.

The other missing bomb- a 2-in. mortar bomb- was located and de stroyed on December 4, but it was thought possible that the anti-tank missile would never be found.

Warning notices which had been erected in the danger area were removed yesterday.
