Mr. South will be well remembered by older citizens as proprietor of the "Port Pirie Advocate" in the earlier history of the town, and later pro-prietor of "Port Pirie Recorder" until the paper changed hands toward the

end of. the war.

Coming to Pirie at the compara-tively early age of 23, Mr. South took over the old weekly "Port Pirie Gazette,' in 1884, from Messrs. Anthony and O'Brien. He and his brother, the late Mr. Walter South, conducted the paper under the changed-name of the "Port Pirie Advocate" until his brother severed his connection with the business.

to the "Port Pirie Recorder," with

which was incorporated the "Port Pirie Standard," a weekly controlled by .Mr. Meyrick. With the amal-gamation off the two papers, the "Port Pirie Recorder" became a bi-weekiy, and was conducted under the partnership of Meyrick and South for about five years, when Mr. Meyrick withdrew from the business.

Became a Daily

Mr. South then carried on the paper in his own name, and. early in the war years the journal became a daily under his control.

Toward the end of the war Mr. South sold the paper to News Limited, and the name was changed to "The

Recorder."
