Native Affairs

RECORD OF NEW COMMISSIONER

Perth, July 26. — The Minister for Native Affairs, Mr. McDonald, con-firmed yesterday the announce ment that the position of Com-missioner of Native Affairs in Western Australia had been offer-ed to Mr. S. G. Middleton. He said that Mr. Middleton was at present assistant director of the Papuan Department of External Affairs.

Mr McDonald said that Mr. Middleton had served under Sir Hubert Murray, a former Adminis-trator of Papua, and his succes sor, Mr. Leonard Murray. He had had opportunities of making a wide and practical study of the native races and welfare, and pos-sessed extensive field and adminis-trative experience. Sir Hubert, under whom Mr. Middleton had received most of his training, was claimd to have been one of the three or four leading native ad-ministrators produced in the Bri-tish Empire. The Papuan district contained a native population of about 300,000.
