Death of Mr. C. R. Goode.

The death on Monday morning of Mr. Charles Rufus Goode at ''Oaklands" occasioned widespread regret. The The deceased was well-known and highly respected throughout the pas-toral districts, of South Australia. For some time he had been suffering from rheumatism, and complications, which set in about a fortnight ago following upon this complaint, were

the cause of death.

The deceased gentlemen was born on April 27, 1884, at Kyre Magna, in Worcestershire, England, and came to Australia in 1860. Immediately after his arrival he went to Canowie station, under instructions from the Hon. H. Scott, whom he saw before leaving England. Later he en-gaged in pastoral pursuits in the Port Lincoln district with his cousin (Mr. S. Goode), and subsequently en-tered into the service of Messrs. Elder

and Stuckey, in connection with sta-

tions in the Far North. In 1865 he

went with Mr. S. J. Stuckey to In-

dia, for the purposes of bringing back a consignment of camels and don-keys. He acted as super-cargo on the

return voyage and remained in charge of the herds until 1867. This was the first lot of camels ever brought to South Australia. In the following year he settled at Saddleworth, and after engaging extensively in farm-ing and grazing commenced business as an auctioneer and agent. He re-mained at Saddleworth until he be-

came a Government tenant in Bun-daleer Forest Reserve. The late Mr. Goode was keenly interested in public affairs, and after acting at various times on the Saddleworth District Council, the Clare Licensing Bench,

the Midland Road Board, the Sad-dleworth School Board, the Pastoral Board under the Act of 1884, and the Central Land Board, he was elect-ed as an independent member of the House of Assembly for the district of Burra at the general election in 1896. He sat for only one Parliament, re-fusing to allow himself to be re-

nominated three years later. Deceas-ed leaves seven sons and one daught-er, viz. : Messrs. C. H. (Jamestown), T. G. and H. H. (Western Austra-lia), S. L. (Yorke's Peninsula), S. J. (Hummocks Hill), G. C. and W. C.

(Port Pirie} and Mrs. G. D. Inglis (Georgetown).

The funeral took place at George-town yesterday morning, when a   large concourse of friends and re- latives followed the cortege to the local cemetery. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. E. C. Holten, of Port Pirie, who was an in- timate friend of the deceased for

many years. In the course of an im-pressive address at the graveside, Mr   Holten gave an outline of the late Mr. Goode's life. The pall-bearers     were :— Messrs. J. Cameron, R. Bailey
