TWO STEAMERS ADRIFT IN CYCLONE

Helpless Off Queensland Coast

Two steamers are adrift off the coast of Queensland and at the mercy of a cyclone. They are the liners Oonah and Maheno, which were sold recently to Japanese shipbreakers. The Oonah was towing the Maheno from Sydney to Osaka, when the steering gear be-

came disabled and the towline parted. The Maheno is helpless, as it is under-stood that the propellers were taken off before she left Sydney, and she is not carrying fuel. According to a wireless message re-ceived in Melbourne by the Direc-tor of Navigation (Captain J. K. Davis), the Oonah is unable to render assistance until the damage to her steering gear has been repaired. Mean-while, the two ships are drifting help-lessly 60 miles south-east of Sandy Cape, Queensland.
