GEELONG. THE DAY.—We again draw the attention of the police to this most dangerous spot ; scarcely a night passes but some outrage or another is perpetrated on people passing to and from Ashby. On Thursday night, between eight and nine o'clock, as a man who had just come from Melbourne by the steamer was making his way towards Ashby, he was waylaid by two ruffians, one clasping him round the throat and half strangling him, whilst the other rifled his pockets. The villians as a matter of course es-caped, without even being pursued. STEAMER VESTA.—This vessel on her arrival in port yesterday afternoon was detained for up-wards of 40 minutes about a cable's length from the jetty. The detention was, on account of one of the passengers being robbed whilst on board, of a gold watch, and a five pound note. Serjeant McCuinn and two other constables were dis-patched on board, to apprehend the thief, but after searching several individuals no clue was found, either as to the stolen property or the thief. One man had a life preserver with him, which the Serjeant of police very properly took charge of for a time. THE VELOCITY — This find colonial built schooner now hails from the port of Geelong, having become the property of Messrs Robinson and Co., who intend her exclusively for the Adelaide trade. This is the largest vessel belonging to this port, being 160 tons old mea-surement. She was purchased for £550 and will commence her first voyage under her pre-sent owners on Monday next.
