Shepparton Advertiser (Vic. : 1887 - 1953), Monday 25 May 1914, page 3

PERSONAL. At Mrs E Haisman's residence, " Yar-roweo," Nixon-street, this afternoon, Mrs I Davies (whose husband, Sheppar-ton's railway stationmaster, has been promoted to Bendigo) was entertained by a number of ladies. The programme provided was as follows: Recitation, "Story of the Fettered Soul," Mrs Taylor; songs, "God Be with You," Mrs Harrie (Kensington); "Home, Dearie Home," Miss Fredericks ; "Come Back to Erin," Mrs Ickeringill; "Ab-Eent," Miss Davoy (from Solomon. Is-lands, on her way to China); recitation, "Men I might have Married," Miss Johnston (Methodist Ladies' College,

Melbourne). The ladies then adjourned to the lawn, where Mr L J Michel, of the Arcadia Studio, Wyndham-street, took a group photograph; after which afternoon tea was served. Mrs Ralph Longstaff then in a few well-chooen words, presented Mrs Davies with a silver eporgno and a pair of silver vases. Mrs Davies feelingly thanked the ladies for their nice gifts. About 50 ladies were present; and Miss Davey was the aeccompanist.

Tha approaching departure of Mr H M Clipstone, pastor of the Church of Christ, Shepparton, for Castlemaine, will be learned with regret, for Mr Clip-stone has been generally popular, and has proved himself an able teacher and preacher. He will be leaving for his new sphere towards the end of June. A telegram was received from Bendigo last night, announcing the death of Mrs Glasson, wife of Mr J L Glasson, of the No. 1 Shepparton Estate Closer Settle-ment. On April 8th, Mrs Glasson went for the benefit of her health to Quarry Hill, Bendigo, to the residence of her mother, Mrs Barrass; and ever since every letter received by her husband was of an encouraging nature. Yester-day afternoon she suffered a relapse, and the end speedily came. The deceased leaves two daughters, both of whom were with her at Bendigo. Mr H M Clipstone to-day drove Mr Glasson in his motor to Rochester, so that the be-reaved husband might catch the

train there for Bendigo, and be at the funeral to-morrow. Mr Glasson and his family came to Shepparton about four years ago, and for a time his wife and daughters conducted a sweet store in Wyndham-streeet. Mr William Heaphy (son of Mrs C Heaphy, of the Commercial Hotel, Kyabram), who was very well known in Shopparton, and a frequent visitor to this town, died very snddenly on Thursday. The deceased had been in ill health of late, and a week or two back returned from a Melbourne private hos-pital. On Thursday he was about Kya-brsm, and appeared to be in his usual health, but about seven o'clock he had a sudden seizure. Medical aid was sum-moned, but it was without avail. The deceased was a very popular young fellow and was associated with all branches of sport. A few years ago he was one of the best athletes in the dis-trict. being generally regardede as the

finest footballer in the Goulburn Valley. He played for Essendon, but ill-health forced him to retire from the game Mr O E Desseilly, of Narangh Park, has been elected president of the Cob-ram Agricultural Society. Sergeant Kennedy left Shepparton on Saturday morning for his new station, at Elsternwick. On Friday evening the members of the local force assembled at the police station, when on their behalf Inspector T Corkill, presented the ser-geant with a complete smoker's outfit, at the same time congratulating him on his promotion, and wishing him many successes in his future career. Senior Constable W J Carry (now in charge of the Shepparton police, also spoke in felicitous terms. While the promotion of Mr I Davies, stationmaster at Shepparton, to the position of assistant-stationmaster at Bendigo, has given much satisfaction, his departure from Shepparton has generally been viewed with regret. No official could have been more courteous than Mr Davies; more quick and painstaking than he in the endeavor to meet the demands made by the travelling public ; and whether at the eailway station or in any part of the town, his kindly, genial nature never forsook him; and he was always ready to assist wherever assistance was needed. Mr Davies leaves for Bendigo to-morrow (Tuesday) evening; and Shepparton (including the different local railway staffs, with whom he is exceedingly popular), will miss him thereafter. MIr Davie's successor is Mr J Strangward, stationmaster at Hamilton. It will be learned with pleasure that Mr Jas Nugent, shire secretary, who has been confined to his room the past few days, is now imnproving in health, Mr Lawrence Thompson, farmer (formerly of Strathbogie), who had been in the Mooroopna Hospital for some time, died yesterday morning from heart failure, at the age of 50 years. De-ceased, who was a bachelor, was the brother of ex-Cr. W L Thompson, and of Mrs John M'Inerney, of Cosgrove. The funeral took place at the Sheppar-ton cemetery this afternoon, when the Rev Geo Paul conduoted the service, Mr W F Bowen having charge of the mortuary arrangements. Mr Wagener (who was at one time connected with the Water Commission at Tatura), tendered his resignation to the Mansfield Shire Council as engineer, having obtained a more lucrative ap-pointment as engineer to the town of Mackay, Queeneland, An engagement is announnced between Mr Charles H Main, of Warracknabeal (son of Mrs and Mrs J Mr Main, of Euroa, and Miss Faye Miller, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Miller, of Horsham.

The death occurred in the police hos-pital on Saturday of Sergeant Michael Drumnmond, of Benalla, from pernicious anemia. Some years ago Sergeant Drummond, while a senior-constable, was stationed at Fitzroy. He also was at Russell-street, Nathalia and Maffra, and was a member of the Mooroopna Hospital Board of management. De-resed (who was well known in Shep-parton), was 56 years of age, The funeral took place at the Presbyterian portion of the Boroondara Cemetery today, and the Police Band, with many members of the force, lead the cortege. The Presbyterian Church at Nagembie has given a unanimous call to the Rev A H Tolhurst, of Dalby, Queensland.
