December 17.

At a meeting of the tobacco trade to-day the following resolutions were carried-That the published reports of the Border Conference disclose an adequate reason for the imposition of the additional duty of 3d. per lb. on leaf tobacco, as the border is virtually closed to Adelaide-made tobacco, and New South Wales has not increased its duty on leaf tobacco since the last border convention was made." "That if South Australia needed additional revenue from tobacco, it would be only reasonable and equitable to increase the duties on manufactured tobacco to 2d. and 3d. per lb., and on imported cigars to 6d., and that a petition be drawn up asking the Government to give effect to the suggestion."

John L. Young, late head master of the Adelaide Educational Institution, was presented, on the occasion of his leaving for England, with 380 sovereigns by old scholars and others. Mr. Caleb Peacock, M.L A., made the presentation.
