Some lime ago Mr. W\ Roberts, clerk of works to the llunlly Shire Council, tendered his resignation, and he attended yesterday's council meeting at Iluntly for the last time in his official capacity. .Mr. J. M'Loughliu, the well-known side drummer, of Bendigo, who recently left for Western Australia, under engagement to the Boulder City Baud, lias already distinguished himself in the Western State as a bandsman. The ''Kalgoorlie Miner," of 23rd April, referring to a Sunday eouert by the Boulder City Brass Band, say*;: — "Considerable interest was aroused by the first appearance in the band's concerts of Mr. J. M'Loughlin, a recent arrival from Bendigo, where he had received much kudos as a side drum and effects manipulator. Jle is certainly a great acquisition, and it was admitted on all sides that never on the goldfields had such a good kettle-drum per forma lice been previously heard."

The recent death of the late Mr. John M'Lay, of Maroug, was referred to by C'r. Bailey, at yesterday's meeting of the Maroug Shire Council in terms of regret. lie said ilw decw.sDd gentleman was one of t!:c most stvaighttorward and honorable, mcu he had cwr met. The late Mr. M'Lay had boon a member of the council for many years, and he (Cr. Bailey) succeeded hinfin tlie council. Ho moved that a letter *»f condolence be sent to the bereaved family. Cr. Carter added a few words of regret, and the motion was agreed to.

Mr. H. A. Nevitt has accepted the position of chancellor of the Diowse of Ballarat, rendered vacant by the death of Sir Tlenry Cnthhert, and offered him by the Anglican Bishop of Ballarat (Dr. Green). Mr. Ncvitt will he the third chancellor of the diocccie, the two former occupants of tiie office having been the late Judge Rogers and the

late Sir Henry Cuthhort.

It is notified in the ''Government, Gazette" this week that Mr. Stuart Murray's

term of office as chairman of the Water

The will of Mr. George Gordon, late of Ellerslie Gordon-street. Toorak, civil en-gineer, who died on 25th February last, was filed for probate yesterday. Testator
