FIRES IN THE GRAMPlANS. E n STAWELL, Thursday. Extensive fires have been raging in the Grampians during the week, but up to Wednesday no damage had been done to property. Yestcrday the fiire, fanned by the north . wiid, was carried into close proximity to the residence of the caretaker of water 'supply and the private' houses of Miss Dalton, Mrs. Wehl and Mr.. G. Mitchell. A detached kitchlen at Miss Dal-. ton's caught fire, but i was torn down by the fireofighters, and in the .end the mail building.. was saved The flanmes swept across the creek and demolished the caretaker's residence and all outbuildings. Mr. Mitchell's residence was saved after a despierate fight. The whole of the upper portion of Hall's -Gap has been swept. The Grampians were obscured to-night by'thick. smoke. Thermometer, 105. deg.
