'WARDEN'S REPORT .

The following is Warden Finnerty's reportj telegraphed to the Commissioner of Lands : — ' Arrived from Bayley's find on Saturday night. The road there from Southeru Cross is at present well watered, and has splen

did feed for horses round the granite rocks. The, find is 16 miles northeast from G-nai'lbines rocks, marked on Hunt's track. Bayley's find is a very rough patch in a quartz reef. I have granted 100ft. for reward claims. About half-a-niile south-west of this claim is a flat of about 40 acres, and this is the main camp at present A considerable quantity of gold has been obtained there by specking and dry blowing, 1 mile north of this flat a small water course is being worked by about 20 -men, most of whom are making good wages. Gold has been picked up on the surface for upwards of 4 mi les. . squ are. The gold so obtained weighs, from, colors to 2ooz. pieces. No real testing of the country has yet been attempted. Several quartz reefs have been found, carrying gold, but nothing except t\\n. prospector's is sufficiently, rich to .dolly. . Si .iking for water is being. done by a party of men to whom :1 have promised a water right, if successful. There is sufficient timber for mining purposes. The .country is granite ironstone and qucenstone grit,- with occasional small banks of slate. There is water sufficient for six weeks within 20 miles of the field. Bayley returned with me to Southeru Cross, bringing with him a £iirther£o25oz '.of gold.' . Later. „ The latest news from Southern Cross states that Talbot, one of the discoverers of the new find, has just arrived with 287 ounces of gold.
