Old Bicycle May Be Key To Mystery

LEONORA, Fri: The discovery at Mertondale Sta- * tion of an old cycle which had apparently lain undisturbed in spinifex country near Breakaways for many years may be the solution to an. old mystery. On December 18, 1918, in a shade temperature of 118, a prospector named Guerononi, carrying a large number of gold sovereigns, set off by bicycle from Anaconda to ride into Leonora for Christmas week. He was never seen

again. The discovery of the cycle, made by - natives this week, has been reported to Constable W. Treloar at Leonora. Mr. Frank Poletti, of Leonora, who took' part in the search for Guerononi, said that after Guerononi disappeared tiie search party followed the bicycle tracks, saw where Guerononi had taken the wrong turning after having passed through Malcolm, but finally lost the tracks near Mertondale. Mr. Irwin Fitzgerald, of Namba Station, which adjoins Mertondale Station,, said that natives reported to Hhim having found the bicycle. On investigation he found that the tyres and tubes had disintegrated and the handlP bars and wheels rims had rusted away, but the pump was still attached to the frame, indicating that the bicycle had been abandoned when in good condition.
