Incentive LOSSES TO STATE TEAM

(ByR.L.H.)

Though officially cricket opened a fortnight ago, when the 'A' grade commenced a round of games, the first full muster of W.A.C.A. cricketers — 30 teams over all grades — will take charge of the wickets on Saturday. In some measure this late start will be compensated for by a quicker development towards form, because, though denied match practice, players have now been busy at the nets for a month.

WITH the prospect of the interstate second grade competition materialising within the next few weeks, ami the State v. Australian XL match fixed for late March, first grade cricketers have plenty of incentive for doing well in club games from the beginning of the season. The last State team selected — against .lardine's English team 12 months ago — was picked on the form shown 12 months previously. This, though in many

ways an unsatisfactory method, was made necessary by the early visit of the overseas tourists who arrived in Perth before a single grade game had been played. The next representative team, however, will be picked on the merit which cricketers show this season, and so aspiring players can take heart in the fact that at the moment there are 11 vacancies in the team. Lovelock in Form Of the team that played against the Jardine combination six played in the round of games concluded last week-end and only two— R. Bryant, the captain,

and O. Lovelock, the 'keeper — showed form that would entitled them to immediate selection in another side. Bryant made 62, but not in his best style. The imperfections that led to him giving three chances, however, may be attributed to the handicap under which his club has been practising. Mt. Lawley have not yet been able to attend their own ground, but have been on the 'visiting list' of other clubs for their practice. Lovelock's form behind the wickets was as good as ever and he punched the ball very hard in making 29. He was one of the successes in the last big game and now looks a fixture in the State team for many years to come. Not Available

Barney O'Shaughnessy, one of the most promising young bowlers we have had for many seasons, will not be available this season. He has gone to Wiluna and no doubt will be down here during country week. If he can hold his form in a place where the summer temperature is anything up to 120 degrees in the shade and does well in the country week games, he may still go into the side. Jarvis, too, may not be available. He has stated that he does not intend playing this season, but he may find the call of the summer game as irresistible as he did football last season. Calder, another member of the last State XL, has been transferred to the country, but he may make his way into the team through the same channel by which O'Shaughnessy will try — Country Week.
