THE HEAT WAVE IN AMERICA.

The terrific heat which has be ex-perienced in the United States during the past few days still continues. Up

to the present date there have been 280 fatalities through the heat, of which 87

Occurred In Greater New York on Mon-day. The total deaths in Greater New York for the five days just ended is 1360. The horse traffic has been large-

ly abandoned and no fewer than 160 police are on the sick list.

In the States East of the Rockies the heat is insufferable, and is as yet un-abated in its severity.

The Government Weather Bureau officials consider that it is likely that the heat wave will last one month. The total number of deaths in New York directly attributable to the heat is 1060.

Yesterday. (Tuesday) notwithstand-ing that firemen were stationed at in-tervals to hose the horses in the pass-ing traffic, 250 of the animals died in the streets of New York

The public cars have all stopped run ning. and the resources of the Hospit-als are exhausted, business is at a

standstill, factories are closed, and many buildings are almost abandoned.

Millionaires are appearing in the streets without their coats and labour-ers are wearing gymnastic costumes.
