Notable soldier dies.

MAJOR-GENERAL SIR A. B. TULLOCH.

The death is announced this morning; of Major-General Sir Alexander Bruce Tulloch, formerly military command-ant for the State of Victoria. (Deceased was born in Edinburgh on September 2, 1838, and joined the 1st

Royals in 1855. He passed the Staff College in 1869, and subsequently filled several important militairy positions in the Intelligence Department of the War Office. At the time he was Vic-torian commandant, he, was also gener-al military adviser to the Australian Colonies, and he was president of the Royal Commision on Defence Organis-ation in Sydney in 1892. He served in the Crimea, 1855-56; India, 1857-58; China campaign, 1859-60; Egyptian campaign, 1882. He also served for the Intelligence Department with the Spanish army during the Carlist war in the Pyrenees in 1874. He was

"Times" war correspondent in Man- churia in 1904. He wrote several in-teresting books, notably, "Forty Years' Service," 'The Highland Rising of the '45, "A Soldier's Sailoring," and "Possible Battlefields in the Next Euro-pean War." Major-General Tulloch retired some years ago, and lived quiet-ly at Glaslyn Court, Crickhowel, Brecknockshire, South Wales. He was married twice, and had a family of five sons).
