CLAREMONT MAN GETS

THE D.S.C.

Sub - Lieutenant Harold Edwin Harper, son of Canon H. Harper, formerly rector of Christ Church, Claremont, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his part in a midget submarine attack.

As a member of the crew of the submarine XEI, he took part in the attack on the Japanese ship Takao as she lay off Singapore in Johore Straits. At the same time, submarine XE3 was attacking a Japanese heavy cruiser nearby. This latter exploit earned two members of XE3's crew the Victoria Cross. Sub-Lieutenant Harper was educated at Christ Church Grammar School, Claremont. He left for England four years before the commencement of World War II, enlisted as a member of the Royal Navy when the war began. He hopes to return to Western Australia soon.DFC DFC For Flier For displaying the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty, Flying Officer Errol Preston Andrews, of 33 Circe Circle, Nedlands, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He completed 35 operational sorties with daylight bombingLancaster Lancaster aircraft, is modest about his experiences, but mentions an occasion when the aircraft in which he was operating had its hydraulics shot away, and wheels had to be lowered by alternately

diving and pulling-up the aircraft. Educated at Perth Modern School, he trained as a bomb-aimer in Wes tern Australia and the Eastern States, has been demobilised since October, and intends resuming his trade as a builder early in the new year.
