SEVENTH AVENUE. BRIDGE

Danger to Public

The ' overhead bridge crossing the railway line at Seventh-avenue, Maylands, is in a dangerous condition, according to reports submitted to the Perth Road Board last night by the secretary (Mr. W. E. Stockdale), and the engineer (Mr. J R Arundale).

The reports followed a complaint that a portion of the bridge had fallen and narrowly missed striking a pedestrian. The board had investigation made, and discovered that the maintenance of the decking was its responsibility, and the maintenance of the superstructure that of the Railway Department. Mr. Arundale stated that the bearers of the superstructure were badly woi'n. and incapable of proper fastening. The decking, on which the board had oome years ago placed sleepers in a parallel position with the bridge, was also badly worn. The sleepers- were moving about, and if a vehicle, by chance, ran off them it would be in danger of plunging through the rotted decking on to . the railroad below. In view of this, the board decided that Mr. Arundale confer with the departmental engineers, with the object of joint action for repairs. An estimate of the cost for the board's portion of the work is £507. Notices will be placed on the bridge, warning vehicular drivers of the existing danger.
