FREMANTLE ESPLA-NADE

A sum of £4,500 was provided some timo ago, for extending the Fromantle Esplanade, and the work is now in hand. The people of Fremantle desire a further extension, and the Government has the matter in hand. It has been stated that a hitch has occurred in re-gard to this, owing to the Government being unable to negotiate with Mr. J.

Briggs, M.L.C., as to the cost of resum-ing some of his land. The Minister of Public Works says the position is that the portion of the work—for which the £4,000 was provid-ed— does not extend to that part of Mr. Briggs' land, to which the above re-mark referred. The department pre-viously secured some of Mr. Briggs' land, and compensated him for the por-tion resumed, and the damage done by severance. He stated also that the ques-tion of terms had arisen in connection with the further resumption of land owner by Mr. Briggs, for the purpose of again extending the esplanade, but no agreement had yet been arrived at. He expected, however, that an arrangement would b made with Mr. Briggs, which would be mutually satisfactory.
