LONDON, Friday.

A son was born to HRH the

Duchess of Gloucester yesterday. The new Prince Is fourth in line of succession to the Throne of England.

The baby was born in a nursing home, and both mother and child are well.

The line of succession now is:Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret Rose, the Duke of Gloucester, the Duke of Gloucester's son.

For the first time in many genera-tions the Home Secretary was not present when the Royal baby was born, blind being the new policy announced recently.

The Duke of Gloucester was at the nursing home at the time, having been granted special compassionate leave" from his military duties. He immediately telephoned the news to the King and Queen and to Queen Mary.

The King and Queen had promised to attend a Christmas party at Royal riding school, but they remained in the Palace when told the birth was expected.

Tonight's Court circular stated that Their Majesties received the news of the birth with the greatest pleasure."

The Duchess has been seen little in public since war broke out, except among the WAAFS, in which she holds the rank of air-command-ant. She has spent recent months quietly at Barnwell Manor, the Gloucesters' country home. In Northamptonshire.

The Duchess of Gloucester was formerly Lady Alice MontagueDouglas Scott. She was married to the Duke of Gloucester in November,

1935.
