AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE

CANBERRA, Monday. The Commonwealth literary fund committee has granted fellowships to Messrs. J. H. M. Abbott and Sidney J. Baker to enable them to complete literary and historical] works on which they are engaged. Mr. Abbott's fellowship carries a grant at the rate of £250 a year. He is writing the story of Newcastle Packets and the Hunter River District."

Mr. Baker, who has also been granted £250, is working on two manuscripts, a monograph on the Australian language and a dictionary of the Australian language. The committee has also arranged for publication of a novel by Phyllis Somerville, entitled "Not Only in Stone, which won the South Australian Centenary novel award in 1936. A collection of 21 short stories by Gavin S. Casey, deal-ing with life on the West Australian goldfields, will be published.
