BENDIGO NEWS

GOLD DISCOVERER'S DAUGHTER

Living in Bendigo is a daughter of Mrs. Margaret Kennedy, one of the dis-coverers of gold on the Bendigo field. She is Mrs. Margaret Polglaise, who lived for 50 years at Sparrow Hawk, but who is now living in Specimen Hill rd. She was two years of age when one morning in September, 1851, her mother found gold in the creek where the gold memo-rial now stands. Next day her father, John Kennedy and a shepherd also found gold there. Happy Jack is named after Mr. Polglaise's father who had his hut where the hotel at Happy Jack stood. Now 93 years of age, Mrs. Polglaise is well preserved. She does not remember much of her infant days on the Ravens-wood sheep station.
