LUMPERS

— w _ NATIONAL WATERSIDE WORKERS y THE UNION REGISTERED.

The Registrar of the Arbitration Court has notified Mr. J. D. Moss that he has decided to register the, Fremantle National Waterside Workers' Union as a union under the Arbitration and Conciliation Court. The National Waterside Workers'

made their application before the Registrar on Wednesday. Objection was taken by the Fremnatle Lumpers' Union and the Perth, Bunbury, and Albany Waterside Workers' Unions. The objectors were represented by Mr. H. E. Hill, of Penny and Hill, and the applicants by Mr. J. David Moss. On behalf of the applicants it was contended that the numerical strength of their union was 300, that the Fremantle Lumpers' Union had closed its books against new members, that they had ceased employment, and it was inefficient for the purposes of the industry, and therefore it was not convenient that the bulk of the members could belong to the Fremantle Lumpers' Union. On behalf of the objectors it was contended that the industry was controlled by the Federal Arbitration Court, that the union was one to which the new union . could conveniently belong, that there was insufficient work for the number of members of the new union together with 750 members on the roll of the Fremantle Lumpers' Union, that the admission of new. members had been suspended at the suggestion' of Mr. Justice Higgins, and that there was insufficient work at the port for new members.
