PETITION OF MR. BABBAGE.—Subjoined is a copy of the petition which, on the 8th inst., was ordered to be printed by the House of Assembly :—

"To THE HONORABLE THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY, IN

PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED.

"The humble Petition of Benjamin Herschel Babbage,

of St. Mary's, Sturt, Gentlemen :

"Respectfully showeth—

"That your petitioner has been recalled from, and superseded in, the command of the Northern Exploring Expedition ; and that the expedition itself has been in consequence broken up, although the expense of fitting out and providing the said expedition with stores had been already incurred, thus leaving no further expense in continuing the said expedition beyond the current one of wages.

"That your petitioner had already made several important discoveries, which would have probably led to others of still greater value, had he not been superseded in the command of the said expedition.

"That your petitioner feels deeply aggrieved by the censures which have been cast upon him as commander of the said expedition.

"Your petitioner, therefore, humbly prays that your Honorable House will grant such an inquiry into all the circumstances connected with the said expedition as may be satisfactory to the public on the one hand, and as may be due to your petitioner on the other.

"And your petitioner, as in duty bound, will ever

pray, &c.

"B. HERSCHEL BABBAGE. "December 7, 1858."
