Sporting.

The Steeplechase at Gawler on Saturday last was a disastrous race. Exporter; (ridden by J; H. Neale) fell at the first fence, and the rider loosened an old fracture of his leg. The Swell, riden by J as. Smith, another Mount Garobier horseman, was going well when he fell. Smith, who had previously had a fall off Hilation "in the Hurdlerace, was badly injured, sustaining concussion and a fracture of the skull, and It was deemed advisable to remove him to the Adelaide 'hospital. The Swell was also badly injured, and it is probable that he will not recover from the aiccident. Kappacoola jumped badly, and eventually fell. The locally owned Black Eves, ridden by J. Cook, finished second, being beaten by 15 lengths by the winner, Mackprode.

Mr. E. A. Killmier, who recently purchased Ben Miller at auction for 100 gs., evidently secured a bargain, as Ben was equal 'to winning the October Handicap and Electric Welter at Gawler on SaturThe stake money of the two events

amounted to 180 sovs., and Ben Miller ' paid £11 in the October Handicap, and

both races, Ben Miller was 'bred in the

Warrnambool district, 'being :by The Har- = vester from Oracle, and'was purchased as a youngster by Messrs. Lange Bros.,

for whom he won many araces. I

Jarwan was well backed at 7 to 1 for the Welter Handicap at Mooaee Valley on 'Saturday, won by Reoaller, 'but he could only ynish fourth. Time for the six furlongs, 1.151.

GreeK Fire, who won the valuable Mooncc Valley Cup on Saturday, is by Pistol from Grecian Beauty, 'and is owned by Mr. K. D. Bowman, of South Australia, and trained by M. Whelan. .Greek Fire was well backed for Saturday's race, and his victory came as no surprise after his good showing in the CaUlfield Cup, in which he was prominent lor the first mile and. a quarter. Hardrada,- another 'inmiate of Whelan's stable, started in the Hilrdle Race, but ran last.

J. Lightfoot rode three winners at the Canterbury Park (Sydney) races last Saturday-- - ^ : <'

running home on his own.

It is said that The Parisian has retired from racing. The Bobadil 'gelding did good service for Mr. J. F." Kirby, winning £8,905 in stakes. jHis victories included ;the Melbourne Cup, Australian Cup, Warrnambool Cup, and Hamilton Cup.
