NEW BEAUFORT STREET BRIDGE

CONSTRUCTION COMMENCED.

Recently the Commissioner of Rail-ways wrote to the City Council inti-mating that a start would be made with the construction of the new Beaufort-street bridge this morning. Keeping to the letter of the promise, a large squad of men, together with a number of Horses and drays, com-menced work on the railway ground immediately to the east of the pre-sent structure this morning. The unusual sight of such a number of men with teams busily engaged in moving sand attracted attention, and soon the fence along Wellington and Forrest streets, with the eastern rail-ing of the bridge, was lined by a curious crowd, who watched the work. Amongst the large crowd the chief topic of conversation appeared to consist of exchanging reminiscences, agreeable and otherwise, of things and incidents that the narrators had both witnessed and heard of on the "old" bridge. The work which was com-menced this morning was the first, stage of constructing a temporary bridge to carry the traffic while the present structure is being demolished and the new bridge erected. The temporary structure, which will be of wood with iron pillars, will be 37ft. wide.
