OBITUARY

MR. ALBERT YEATES

The death occurred last Friday at Miles of Mr. Albert Yeates. after a brief illness. Mr. Yeates, who was in his eighty-sixth year, had enjoyed ex-cellent health until recently.

Born in South Australia, he came to Queensland with his parents in 1868. The family settled on the Don River at Bowen, where they engaged in farming and grazing pursuits. In 1880, the family travelled across coun-

try via Alpha, to Adavale, where, in partnership with the late Mr. J. F. Cudmore. they purchased Boondoon station from Conn Brothers, in 1897 they disposed of the station to the late Mr. A. H. Pegler.

Mr. Albert Yeates selected land on the Ward River, near Charleville. In partnership with another brother, he established Lockwood, about 30,000 acres. Lockwood is now the pro-

perty of the estate of the late Mr. A. M. Deutscher. Mr. Yeates. after con-tending with droughts and low prices on the land, entered into business at

Miles for some 10 years. A few years ago he retired.

In 1886 he established the Western Carrying Company, with 10 bullock and horse teams. . The company en-gaged in transporting wool from the Far West to the rail head and sta-tion supplies on the return journey. The terminus of the Western line

was then at Roma.

Mr. Albert Yeates is survived by five younger brothers, including Alderman Herbert Yeates, M.L.A.
