OBITUARY

Mr. E. Ambrose

By the recent death of Mr. S. Ambrose, sen., Marmor, the district has lost a well-known citizen and one who estab-lished and developed an im-portant local industry. Born at Gympie, 76 years ago, he com-menced work at 10 years of age, following many callings. Striking out for himself, his first venture was cutting and carting sleeper blocks for the North Coast railway. From that he became interested in mining and eventually concen-trated on the lime quarries at Raglan, Marmor and Ambrose. The rural district and railway station that bear his name are a memorial to the part he played in the development of

the area.

After Mt. Morgan ceased to operate at Marmor, Mr. Am-brose undertook the reopening of the Marmor limestone quarries. When he retired from active participation his two sons, David and Cecil, took over, and still conduct the

quarry.

Mr. Ambrose was a keen sporting man. He owned several racehorses, and up to a few years ago was a frequent visitor to the Rockhampton course.

He was predeceased by his wife some five months ago and is survived by three sons, David and Cecil (Marmor), Leslie (Gladstone), and three daugh-ters, all residing in Brisbane.
