MONTY'S DOUBLE BROKE

Man who pulled one of the biggest bluffs of the war, doubling for Field-Marshal Montgomery, lined up for the dole at the London Labor Exchange recently.

He is Edward Clifton-James, who, when, a lieutenant in the Royal Army Pay Corps, doubled for Montgomery in the Mediterranean on the eve of D-Day, fooled the Germans about the date. Clifton-James received the dole because he needed support for his wife and 2 children.

Twenty years ago he started acting with Fred Karno, but since he was demobbed last June has only had 3 days' work. He explained that managers said his presence on the stage would be disturbing because people would go to the theatre only to see Montys' double.

Says Clifton-James: "No actor ever got more publicity than I did. Managers and others rushed to greet me, set me on a pedestal for all to see —but none of them thought of offering me a job."
