CRICKETER WELCOMED HOME .CARLTON' CLUB PROVIDES. - ENTERTAINMENT: . N :,EXAMPLE TO BE .. 'EMULATED At the conclusion of outh Melbou rne'sn atch last. Saturday atearlton a..hearty invitation was extendedto the players and officials ..of the S.M.C.C. to iartake of tea, and afterivards join in a convivial gathering to wvelcome -. hone -.ance-Corporal -N. Sewart, the well-known cricketer. Most of the players availed themselves of the opportunity, and the evening proved that the Carlton club excel as entertainers. They provided a really. sumptuous feast. After the toast of "The King," that of "Our Guest" was' propcsed by Cr. Brunton, and supported by Mr. F. Hyett. "Billy" Sewart, who hais recuperated after his severe illnesIfeelingly . responded, -and in a lengthy speech recited an account of his actions during the time he was at the front. The toast of "The Visitors," among whom were representatives of' the Collingwood and Northcote clubs, was proposed by Mr. F. Delves, and responses were. made by Mr. Bob Deas, captain, Messrs. McKay, Brereton and Lockyer, for South Melbourne, and Messrs. Copeland and Drohan, Collingwood. A good programme was arranged from among those present, and the items were very well received. Prominent among the artists were Messrs. G. St. John and F. Lockyer, of South's eleven. A humorous event was' a presentation to our well-known friend DMr. Paddy Cantwell, who has officiated as scorer for South for many years. Mr. Hyett,. in a witty speech, made the presentation, which consisted of a monster sandwich. Paddy accepted it in the spirit it was given, and. suitably responded. The evening was one of the most pleasant that has been held at the Carlton rooms, and it clearly demonstrated that such gatherings tend to cement the feeling of good-fellowship that exists between the clubs. Representatives of S.M.C.C..are unanimous in this belief, and there is no doubt that a start'will be made locally to follow the precedent established at Carlton.
