PERSONAL . The announcement of the death of Mr. James Worland, which occurred at his residence, "Weeroona," Timer street- yesterday; will be received with keen regret by a large circle of friends throughout the town and district; although it was known for sometime time that he was suffering from an incurable ailment. His death removes one of the oldest and best known residents of the town. A native of Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, he came to Victoria with his parents when two years of age, arriving by the "Orthorna" at Port Fairy in 1853. His parents' settled in the Warrnambool district, where they brought up their family. The deceased served his time with the late Thomas Nayler, tanner, at South Warcnambool, and afterwards he purchased the tannery business on the Merri River carried on by the late Daniel Davies, a concern which he conducted with marked success up to a few months prior to his death. Having resided in the town and district for a period of 62 years, he was closely associated with the growth and progress of the place, and thougie he did not enter, actively into public life, he took a keen interest in and gave loyal and practical support to any movement that had for its object the promotion of the welfare of the community. He was a loyal churchman, and for many years was one of the church wardens of Christ Church. When the news of his death became known shortly after mid-day yesterday the Red Cross flag was flown at half-mast from the church tower and the bells tolled out the sad intelligence. The late Mr. Worland was one of the founders of the local branch of the Royal Society of St. George, and was one of its most earnest and energetic workers, filling the position of President and other minor offices. As a prominent member of the Society he took an active part in promoting the local celebration of Empire Day, and was always to the fore in making the patriotic demonstration a success. He was also one of the oldest members of the M.U.,IO.O.F., and had occupied all the chairs in the local lodge, and at the time of his death was one of the trustees. The deceased gentleman was also known as a staunch advocate of temperance, and always wore the little bit of blue ribbon as a badge of his principles. He leaves a widow and family of six boys and three girls who will have the deepest sympathy of the people of the town in their sad bereavement. Mr. Worland was in his 65th year, and had been ill for about tlhree months before his death. The funeral is appointed to leave his late residence at 2.45 to-morrow afternoon. A short service will be conducted by the Rev. T. P. Bennett at Christ Church after which the cortege will proceed to the Warrnambool cemetery, where the interment till take place. Liout. and Mrs. Stanley Pollard have just concluded a visit of about ten dayrs to Warrnambool and district. Lieut. Polltrd, siho was formerlly the 'ocal Area Officer, has just returned from. the front invalided. He held a comminssion in the 4th Light Horse, and after sustaining a rather serious accident in Egypt, necessitating ten weeks in hospital, he left with his regiment for Gallipoli, whelre he experienced four months in the trenches. He witnessed the Suvla Bay operations and also saw the sinking of H.3M.S. Tniur?ph. Eventuatly he contracted pars-typhoid and was invalided, first to Gibraltar and subsequently to England, where he experienced the greatest of kindness as a guest of Lord and Lady Napier at their charming estate in Sunrey. Liout. Pollard had', what was to him, one of the most interesting experiences while in England in i visit to the late Lord. Tennyson's study, which is maintained as near as possiblle just as the great poet left it on the day of his death. Mrs. Trolloue. of "The Myrtles." Timer-street. has been notified by the Defence Denartment that her I youngest son. Core. L. F. Trollope, had been wounded. It is not reported as serious. Mr. A. G. Sim. ledger-keeper at the Union Bank. left Colae on Friday to go into cam.. He makes the eighth officer of the bank who has enlisted from the local branch for service with the A.I.F.
