SHORT SESSION YESTERDAY Canberra, August 14.

The Chief Justice (Sir Adrian Knox) attended the opening of the Senate today, and administered the oath to Senators Dunn (N.S.W.), Crawford, Foil, and Beid (Queensland), Hoare (South Australia), J. B. Hayes, H. Robert Hays, and Ogden (Tasmania), Barnes, R. C. D. Elliott, and Lawson (Victoria), Sir Hal Colebatch, Johnson, and KingsmiU (Western Australia), and the affirmation to Senator Rae (NJS.WJ.

When the Chief Justice withdrew, Senator Kingsmill was elected president, and the Senate then, adjourned to meet the Governor of New South Wales (Sir Dudley de Chiar), who was deputy for the Governor-General (Lord Stonehaven). The members then returned to the Chamber, where the appointments were I announced of Senator Daly, leader of the Opposition; Senator Dooley, deputyleader; and Senator Dunn. Opposition Whip. Committeemen Appointed Sir George Pearce said the leader of I the Opposition had a very important ' function to perform. He hoped they ?would be able to maintain the high standard of debate which had characterised the Senate in the past, and that they would be able to differ politically but not personally. Senator Plain was appointed chairman of Committees, and Senator Sampson was appointed to the Public Works Committee in place of Senator Payne. Senator Thompson was appointed to the vacancy on the Public - Accounts Committee, caused by tiie resignation of Senator Kingsmill.. life Assurance Bill Prior to the adjournment until Wednesday next, the leader of the Government -Sir George Pearce) said he would introduce a Bill relating to life assurance. This would go only through formal stages, however.
