PTranlc's DAY.-We understand a meet ing was held on Thursday evening, at the Gol den Fleece Inn,- for the. plurpose of discussintg the propriety of having ~a dinner on the 17th ~f this month, which is customary vitlh the sons of the Emerald Isle in every part of the globe. Thoe meeting was respectably attended. It was resolved a dinner should take place, andstewards were appointed .to .carry out the objects of the meeting. It is confidently expected that Jamea Blair, Esq., P.M., will preside on the occaiiotn. Bl:nat Fnats.-We have been informed that these fires, which are caused by the.ignition of the long dry grass, have caused. considerable lose to tho esttlers-in-the n ,ighborhood of th- Pyrenees, some of whon'have had nuimbera of sheep burned to death. Mr. Kittsori's house, close to Bridgcwate'r wias nearly being consumed some day last week, owing to a bush fire which completelv encircled the dwelling, but was sub dued by the fnmily after great exertion. THE HARVEST.-The harvest in this district has lIeon extremely productive-not more so in any part of the Australasian Colonies, which is unquestionable. evidence of the superiority of our. soil over all other places in this hemisphere for agriclltioral purposes. One gentleman, residing about forty miles.from Portland, lied a return of nearly sixty bushels of oats to the acre, of a superior kind. Messrs. Faro and Miller had a crop of wheat iaveraging.forty, bushels to the acre, and not be to siirpo'ssed in Vai Diemen's Laiud for milling purposes. On :the. Wannon, Bryana's Creek,. Grange Burn, and the nume-. rous other rivers flowing through .this fertile District,. there have been abodrdana crops, at. once remunerating to the enterprising agricul turists-indicativo of the capabilities of our Dis trict as a grain countrjy-aihd dinding. toincrease the internal wealth of the Province at large. :The potatoes growon around Poriland are un equalled in .New Holland; both for size and taste; we have seen sotme from- Mr. Kibble's farm, swhich resembled in appearance the cele-. brated Brown's River. potatoe, but added the lHibernian flavor--a dainty which is not easily to be procured in- any other part of the colony. Nvew BuTCHan.--By reference to our adver tising cplumns; it will'be'seen thatMr. D.hRose, of this town, has commenced selling meat at a half-penny per pound less then the other butch ers? Tie ??tton now oni hanid is'of a sunerior quality, andd worthy of inspection. - We uidee staoid he ihas made arrangements for the conti-'" , nued supply of an unusually-good ddscription of meat. AoarceUtURc.--We have beei given. to un derstand that the settlers of this District intetid turning their attention to agricultural pursuits on an extensive scale. Fromtheaccnuntswhich we have heard of thel prepartitins now being made for the enisuing owing season, and tlhe, great demand for ploughs, we are inclined to: think we shill be nearly, if not entirely, inde pendent of YVn.Dieriten's Land after nexi: har vestwith regard to the- supply of flour. Y7r have heard oftivo or three gentlemen who u'iii sowsome hundreds of.acres ..of wheat betwertn them, and we mav expect a few hundreds of acres on the.Port h'airy side,- where a mill -il! soon be in the course of erection. \V.e hae a:' teh thought it a pity to allow the open rich land of this District to remai' untillcd, especially when we know of parts where a plough can 1he driven over' 20,000 acres 'iithout impediment, and we are rejoiced to see the colonists making use of what Noatitie hisdlaviadlly liestowedupoat them, - LITERARY SlOCIrTY.--11r. Oaborne delivers the inaugtiration lecture to the above society, on Monday evening next, in the Scots' Church. . .lmt- To .EUKOPE. - The RicLard Mount iS fast loading, and will, in. a fortnight or three weeks, take herdepartur'?forLondon.
