"Tho Toor nml tho Land; being a Report on tho Snlvution Army ColonieH in tho United States, and at Hadleigh, EnglnntL with a Scheme of National Land Settlement," is tho comprehensivo tillo of a volume by H. Rider Haggard (Longmans, Green, und Company, Londqn), lt appears that, in January last, Mr. Haggard was appointed by tho English Government a commissioner to inspect and report upon tho agricultural settlements established by thc Salvation Army in tho United States, and nt Hadleigh in Suffolk. Tho report on tho above was presented to Parliament in Juno, and published in a Blue Book, of which tho present volume is a reprint. Very full details are given of tho operations of tho Salvation Army, both in America and nt Hadleigh, with which Mr. Haggard, was very favourably impressed, and suggestions aro made for thc establishment of similar colonies in various parts of tho British Empire, under tho supervision of tho British Government. Tho book gives much information of an instructivo and interesting character in a ploasant and readable style.

A public demonstration of tho. Underwriters' Fire Extinguisher was again given at Hell Helo Quarry, Pyrmont, on Novomber 2, by Mr. Howard, of AO Pitt-street, Sydney. Previous exhibitions had boen given at Phillip Park. The undoubted reliability of tho extinguishing powers of this remarkable machine was again demonstrated. Tho test was three sides of a room, 8ft high, filled with inflammable matter saturated with benzine, and when thc whole was ono seething mass of flame, tho machine was brought into play, and in less than ten seconds the conflagration had been completely subdued.

At 10 minutes past 0 o'clock on Saturday morning one of tho apprentices employed at Mr. Andrew M'Kyc's bakery, corner 'of Wost and Ernest streets, North Sydney, noticed an outbreak of smoke and flames, and at once gavo tho alarm to the proprietor. Tho flames quickly got a hold, burning out tho flour store and ono bakehouse. Several hundred pounds' worth of damage has been done.
