SIR RALPH DARLING’S COMMISSION

To the Editor.

Sir, — Major Mowat would find much information

of the kind that he requires in “ The Historical Records of the British Army,” published by W. Clowes and Sons, 13, Charing Cross, London, but as the entire work comprises more than 100 volumes, he might find it more convenient to secure the services of some person having access to one of the large military libraries in England or Ireland to glean through the work, and supply extracts. Should he have no friend or acquaintance able to help him, I might take it on myself to get one of the many army friends that I have to oblige him, in furtherance of his contemplated work.

Tho following are the dates of commissions of Sir Ralph Darling :— 15th Regiment — Ensign, May 15, 1793 ; Lieutenant, September 2, 1795 ; Captain, Sep-tember 6, 1796 ; Major, February 2, 1800. 51st Regiment — Lieutenant-Colonel, July 17, 1801 ; Colonel, July 25,1810 ; Major-General, June 4,1813 ; Lieutenant-General, May 27,1825 ; General, Novem-ber 23, 1841. Colonel-Commanding — 90th Regiment, October 9,1823 ; 41st Regiment, September 26,1837 ; 69th Regiment, February 3, 1848. Died. April 2,

1858. Messrs. Cox and Co., of Craig’s Court, London, would be able to supply all information as to his family, &c., having been his agents.
