:k e ''(By Centre)

,/*' The Union will puf a strong team on the field for the "Lightning Premiership" «eries to be played in Hobart on June 10 and 12. All 24 players named on Tuesday evening by the selection committee will travel to Hobart, and the final selection /Will not be made till the morning the series opens. . .

Generally the team selected ha; ,jmet with approval, perhaps thc only surprise being the omission ol /Devonports coach and captain Xteil Richardson, who gained the siward for the best and fairest in

the T.F.L. last season. However, Richardson has been out of the ¡game for three Saturdays with a 'leg injury, and apparently the Selectors were taking no chances.

Teams from four associations jvill compete in the premiership Series-T.F.L., N.T.F.A., N.W.P.U. i'and Q.F.A. - and at the end of

(the contests the Tasmanian team Ito compete in the A.N.F.C. carniI Tal in Brisbane from-July 20 till July 29 will , be chosen.

The Carnival team selectors are Messrs. G. G. Moline (N.W.F.U.), R. S. Tysen (N.T.F.A.), R. G. f'Seelig (Q.F.A.), M. A. S. M'Near, ;R. A. Adcock, K. E. Austin and ? Major V. A. Geard (T.A.N.F.L.).

Four members of the N.W.F.TJ. were selected to represent the IState at the 1947 carnival. They ;were B. Waldron (Wynyard), J. j ¡Stokes (Burnie), R. Castles (Cooee) ?and L. Webb (East Devonport).

Of the 24 players named,

; only two aire .former carnival.

i players. They a«rEast Devon****/port's leader,. Ray Summers ' ¡(former North Launceston ; champion ruckman), and the v side's deputy leader, Lindsay ; Webb.

, . Reg. Castles has gone to North (Launceston, and J. Stokes is a .'inember of the Richmond (V.F.L.) Iteam. The other former N.W.F.TJ.

.carnival man, Bernie Waldron, is'

reported to have an excellent chance of gaining selection in the T.F.L. representative side«

Two former mainlanders, George Gneil (ex Geelong i (V.F.L.) captain) and dashing I South Melbourne rover, Vic.

Castles, has been appointed captain and deputy captain respectively.

The leading Union team, A.P.P.M., has five representatives - G. Gneil, G. Baker, M. and, D. Anderson and I. Clay. Wynyard has three (L. Hayes, M. Matthews, and J. Riley), Burnie two (V. Castles and W. Byrne), Penguin one (T. Hayes), Ulverstone. one (E. Hill), Yeoman two (F. Hanna and M. Shephard), Devonport three (H. Fitzmaurice, J. Blackaby and J. Lillico), East Devonport three (M. Berryman, R. Summers and L. Webb), Cooee one (L. Redman), and Latrobe two (B. R, Jones and T. Pierce). Stanley's brilliant winger, R. Phillips, is Circular Head's only representative.

The final Union eighteen to play in Hobart will be named on the morning of June 10 by the selectors (Messrs. G. . Moline, E. O'Brien, L. Viney,

W. Barker and R. 3. Breen).

Most of the 24 players are expected to get a game in Hobart. On Saturday the N.W.F.U. will plav the T.F.L. in the main match, and on the Monday it will meet the Q.F.A. in the curtain-raiser to the T.F.L. and N.T.F.A. match.

The team will be a strong one.

The centre-line may consist oi Gneil (full hack), H. Fitzmaurice (centre half-back), V. Castles (centre), L. Webb (centre halfforward) and D. Anderson (fullforward). Castles and Webb may change. In the rucking division, R. Summers, I. Clay and E. Hill appear the. likely trio. R. Phillips is expected to gain one of the wing positions, while Latrobe's T. Peirce may get his chance on the other wing. Lou Redman, in fine form for Cooee in recent matches, should do well in the roving division, if

selected.

Len Hayes, who on present form has an excellent chance of making the State team, will most probably be played on the backline as will Devonports dashing ' defender, J. Blackaby, and East's young halfback, M. Berryman. Yeoman representative, Max Shephard, should gain selection on the forward Une, as also should G. Baker and Max Anderson, who have been having a most successful season with A.P.P.M. Wynyard's J. Riley would be nippy in a forward pocket.

MELBOURNE, Wednesday.- The main Tasmanian League match at

Hobart on Saturday will be mn-. > plred by Egan. The appointment was made to-night by the Victorian League Umpires' Appointment Board. __._
