Mr. J. Milroy Smith, Spreyton

The death occurred on Sunday night of a well known and highly respected resi-dent of Spreyton in the person of Mr. James Milroy Smith. He had been in bad health for some weeks, and he passed peacefully away at "Ava", his Spreyton

home.

A son of the late Lieut-Colonel James Smith, I.M.S., Mr. Milroy Smith was born in Scotland, and was educated in Glasgow High School, later studying for the Army. He emigrated to Australia in 1897, and settled in Mildura where he was engaged in the dried fruits industry, being one of the foundation members of the Australian Dried Fruits Association. Engaged in the orcharding industry since 1912, he was one of the pioneers of that industry in the Mersey Valley. He and Mr. E. A. Walpole were largely instrumental in forming the Spreyton Co-operative Asso-ciation. In all efforts for the betterment of the conditions of those in the industry he always manifested a keen interest, and was ever ready to assist. He was keenly interested in most branches of sport, and was one of the foundation members of the Devonport Golf Club. In 1906 he married Miss Mary Cudmore, a daughter of the late Mr. Daniel Cudmore, a pastoralist of Victor Harbor, South Australia. He is survived by his widow.
