A Mythical Fish.

For over half a century a fish named Ompax spatuloides, described by Castel-nan in 1879, figured on the list of' Queens-land fishes. Gilbert Whitley, of the Aus-tralian Museum, points out in a paper in the American Naturalist that the species is a myth. When one Staiger visited Gayndah station practical jokers prepared for him a fish made up of the head of one fish, the body of another, and the tail of an eel. It was served up at breakfast with the remark that it was very rare. Mr. Staiger made a careful sketch of the cooked specimen before it was eaten. He then sent the sketch to Castelnau.
